Restless Development .
On Tuesday 22nd June (Year 3-5) and Thursday 8th July (Year 6-8) 2021, St Hughs School pupils will be challenging themselves to a triathlon - swimming, cycling and running their way to the finish line whilst raising money for Restless Development and the 4 house charities: Watsan, African Children's Fund, Be Free YC and the Oxfordshire Foster Care Association.
The event is designed to be inclusive and accessible to all abilities - whether its your first time riding a bike, or swimming the distance - there will be lots of staff and volunteers to support the children in reaching their goal. We want everyone to just give it a go, and at the end - you'll cross the finish line and get your very own eco-friendly and sustainable medal to take home and show off to all your friends and family.

Fundraising
Restless Development knows how important charitable giving is for your school’s community. Supporting children to think of their wider role in the world, to encourage giving at an early age, and to support their learning to think of the needs of others and how they can make a difference.
Pupils will be asked to raise a minimum of £30 to take part with a target of £60.
The first £0-£30 will be donated to Restless Development
£30-£60 will be donated to your House schools chosen charity
Any money raised over the £60 target will be donated to Restless Development
Restless Development will provide tons of resources to help the passionate triathletes reach their target, including fundraising packs and friendly support. Fundraisers will be awarded a certificate for achieving their goal. These will be presented in a celebration assembly at school.

It is extremely hard for us to imagine what it must be like not to have running water and adequate sanitation. Being without decent lavatories and clean water near your home are recognised internationally as markers of abject poverty. WATSAN works in partnership with local stakeholders amongst some of the poorest rural communities in South-West Uganda to provide them with access to life-saving clean water, improved sanitation, and health and hygiene education. The project covers an area of about 1000 square miles, which is about the size of Oxfordshire, with hardly any tarmacked roads. Out of a population of about 500,000, up to 150,000 people, even in 2020, still lack these facilities.

In particular, they will be supporting the PORRIDGE CLUBS run in schools in Kenya and Tanzania. Children are given a mug of specially fortified porridge at their morning break. These children come from very poor families and sometimes this mug of porridge is the only meal they have that day. This means that the children come to school instead of begging or scavenging on the streets for food – so as well as providing them with nutritious food it also means they can get an education and a chance to gain the qualifications and skills they need to improve their lives. When we benefit from our delicious school lunches and home cooking, it makes us all realise how lucky we are.

A stark statistic is that at least two children in every classroom in Oxfordshire are young carers. These children will be doing things for their loved ones that mean they are forced to grow up very quickly. Be Free YC provide much needed support for them to help them with the challenges that they face. This takes the form of practical, educational, emotional and social support that helps provide relief and help for the demands that caring has on these extraordinary children. In 2019, amongst other things, they supported 560 young Oxfordshire carers and trained 13 new befrienders.

This is a voluntary organisation set up and run by foster carers to provide support for the carers and the children that they look after. Foster caring can be both hugely rewarding and challenging at the same time. Sometimes children will remain with the same foster carer for many years and some children are offered short term or emergency placements. Money raised will provide the children with experiences such as cooking lessons and trips out that provide the children with social skills that they would not have if they were not looked after by the amazing foster carers who themselves benefit from the support of other foster carers who are a part of the organisation.
